General information

Definition

A computer cookie is a block of information stored when a user browses a website.

How it works

The block of information is sent by a web server when a user visits a website, stored locally and persistently by the web browser as a text file, and sent back to the server on each visit.

  • Nature: a cookie is a small block of information stored when a user browses a website.
  • Sending: the cookie is created by the web server and sent at the same time as the requested page.
  • Return: the cookie is sent back to the server with each navigation (page request).
  • Content: the content is freely defined by the visited website. It may include an identifier, a date, etc.
  • Size: the content size is deliberately limited, not exceeding 4096 characters, to reduce performance impact (bandwidth).
  • Persistence: the cookie has a variable lifespan, chosen by the website according to its needs, ranging from the browsing session duration (session cookies) to several months (statistical cookies).
  • Quantity: a website may store several cookies.
  • Storage: the cookie is stored locally in a text file directly by the web browser without user interaction.
  • Use: since the cookie is received by the server, the server can use the contained data on each navigation.

Usage

Cookies allow data to be stored locally between each visit to a website. The stored content may include a user identifier, settings, or session identifiers (session cookies), which may be encrypted.

This information is sent back to the web server, which is then able to use it in the context of user navigation, consolidate it, and store it in a server-side database.

The final use enables the maintenance of a user authentication session or the recording of user behavior (traffic statistics or reuse for advertising marketing, remarketing, etc.).

Classification by purpose

  • Functional cookies: enable website services to operate properly: login, authentication, online payment, personalization, security, etc.
  • Analytics cookies: enable behavior analysis: data collection, statistics, advertising, etc.

Classification by origin

  • First-party cookies: cookies managed by the visited website.
  • Third-party cookies: cookies managed by external services invoked by the visited website.

Regulation

The use of cookies on websites is subject to legal obligations arising from various legislative sources.
